Nan Buckner, Owner
|

|
Nan is originally from Dayton and Cincinnati, Ohio. Nan rode her first horse at the age of 4 and began formal riding lessons at the age of 6. School years were spent competing in both A.H.S.A. sanctioned Hunters and AQHA Hunters. She also rode to hounds with the Miami Valley Hunt and did some horse trials and eventing in the off-season of foxhunting. Summers were spent teaching children to ride and the basics of horsemanship at summer camps, while also competing in 4-H. In the late '70's Nan became interested in Dressage and after high school enrolled in Meredith Manor School of Horsemanship to work with Kay Meredith and Denny Callin, who were both short-listed for the 1982 Olympics. Nan graduated from Meredith Manor with a Riding Master Diploma with special emphasis on teaching. While attending Meredith Manor, she was personal groom for Jo Struby, an active 3-Day competitor and clinician. Nan traveled with Jo as she qualified for the first Rolex (KY) Three-Day.
Summers during college were spent as Riding Director at Lake-of-the-Woods Camp for Girls and Greenwoods Camp for Boys in Michigan and competing at Hunter Shows throughout the Michigan, Ohio, and Indiana regions. Nan graduated from Salem College, Salem WV, in May of 1982 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Equine Science, a pre-veterinary program. Nan also is a Certified Veterinary Technician.
While attending Salem, Nan competed on Salem's Intercollegiate Team that was part of the newly formed I.H.S.A.. Nan competed successfully at Intercollegiate shows in the Midwest, including Middle Tennessee State, Lake Erie College, Southern Illinois University, Purdue University, University of KY, and Miami (of Ohio). Nan was Team Captain her Junior and Senior years.
After college, Nan accepted a position at a private stable in Findlay, OH. There she was in charge of a lesson program of 120 students, 16-18 school horses and 10-12 boarders. While in Findlay, she worked with students at Findlay College and Bowling Green State University teaching college level courses in riding and stable management, while performing assistant coaching duties for Findlay's Intercollegiate team. By 1985 she had met her future husband, Alan, and decided she was not spending as much time with her own horses as she wanted to. She left her position in Findlay and Nan and Alan married in the Spring of 1987 and settled in Cincinnati, where she owned and operated a tack shop, Equine Essentials. In 1994, Nan and her new mare, Blue Savannah, campaigned on the Ohio Hunter Jumper Association and "A" circuits, were Year-End champions in the Adult Hunter division, and won many series awards. Nan and her family relocated to Atlanta in the spring of 1996, where she continued Savvy's winning ways in the Adult and Amateur/Owner divisions. They have won many GHJA year end and USEF Zone 4 awards for their hard work. Savvy has been retired for the most part, but still enjoys a good hack every now and then.
Hunter/Jumper trainers Nan has worked and competed with have included Claudia Roland, Sunny Stephens, Chip Leonard, Chris Payne, Matt Payne, Dana Link, Scott Taylor, Marianne Murphy, Michael Newman, Skip Thornbury, Clark Denton, Ronnie Mutch, and Carolyn Knabb. Dressage and Eventing instructors have included Kay Meredith, Denny Callin, Elliot Abhau, Jo Struby, Diana Rich, Laurie Gumper, and Garth Harrison.
Nan sits on the board of directors of the Georgia Hunter/Jumper Association and earned her colors with Shamrock Hounds, an organized fox hunt recognized by the Masters of Foxhounds Association. She has assisted Shamrock Pony Club by providing clinics and instruction, and has organized fund raising efforts for three organizations (GHJA, Shamrock Hounds, and Shamrock Pony Club). She served as chair and organizer of the Hunter Pace for Shamrock Hounds, its annual horse show type fund raising event. Shamrock Hounds is currently listed as being reorganized with the Masters of Fox Hounds Association and although her retail store limits her involvement, Nan has been an active member of Bear Creek Hounds in Moreland, GA. Nan has been working on her judge’s card off and on and judges several GHJA local shows each year.
Nan and Alan live in Alpharetta, at their Woodland Farm, where they own 4 horses. Nan's newest passion is showing her 3 year old, Forever Blue (Rio, above right), and her 1 year old, Blue Irish Storm (Bridget, above left) in the Hunter Breeding classes.
